Bard in the Backcountry is a documentary film that chronicles a summer season of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, a professional traveling theater company based in Bozeman, Montana. The film features the season’s cast of ten actors from around the U.S. as they encounter the Montana landscape, culture and people, many for the first time. As these young actors travel hundreds of miles every day to set up in their stage, don their costumes and perform their roles, they learn about the discipline of a traveling company, the generosity of spirit needed to become part of a team, and the sheer magnitude of the terrain found across Montana. The landscape itself is a primary force in the lives of the players as they perform each night in a new location. This tour leads them into the lives of people living in communities as small as fourteen people, characters who are long time Montana Shakespeare in the Parks viewers, loyal fans who have seen Shakespeare rendered every summer for forty years. At the heart of the story is a sense of transformation, for the players and for those residents of Montana who’s lives have been touched by this beloved company.
